Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical Step-Down Unit (MSDU)

Location: Rochester, NY

Contract Length: 13 Weeks

Shift: 3x12 Nights (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)

Job Summary

The Medical Step-Down Unit Registered Nurse (MSDU RN) provides specialized nursing care to adult patients requiring a higher level of monitoring and treatment than a traditional medical-surgical unit. The RN is responsible for patient assessment, cardiac monitoring, respiratory support, medication administration, and coordination of care for patients transitioning from critical care areas. This role requires strong clinical judgment, telemetry experience, and the ability to manage complex patient conditions in a fast-paced step-down environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Active New York State RN License required (Must Be In Hand – No Exceptions).

  • Current AHA BLS Certification required.

  • Current NIHSS Certification required.

  • Minimum 2 years of recent MSDU, Step-Down, PCU, IMCU, or Acute Care RN experience required.

  • EPIC EMR experience required.

  • Strong telemetry and cardiac monitoring experience required.

  • Experience managing high-acuity adult patients required.

  • Ability to manage Med-Surg patient ratios of 1:5 to 1:7 required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care to adult step-down and intermediate care patients.

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and ongoing monitoring.

  • Interpret and respond to telemetry and cardiac rhythm changes.

  • Administer medications and IV therapies according to physician orders.

  • Manage peripheral IV lines and perform phlebotomy duties as needed.

  • Provide respiratory care support including oxygen therapy and non-invasive airway management.

  • Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in EPIC.

  • Follow infection control and isolation precaution protocols.

  • Float within skillset as required.
