Position Overview

A public safety emergency communications center in Washington, DC is hiring Public Safety Dispatchers to manage radio communications and coordinate emergency response activities. This role supports police and Fire/EMS operations through accurate dispatching, effective communication, and real-time event documentation.

Key Duties

  • Dispatch emergency and non-emergency calls using approved response plans and formats
  • Coordinate and monitor police and Fire/EMS unit activity
  • Operate assigned radio channels, including backup systems as needed
  • Maintain control of radio traffic at all times
  • Practice professional radio techniques and issue appropriate notifications
  • Evaluate incoming information to determine the level of emergency response required
  • Accurately relay messages and instructions
  • Maintain thorough and timely incident documentation
  • Update event records as situations evolve

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a released Emergency Communications Officer in a multi-agency PSAP

Required Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
  • Strong multitasking and time-management skills
  • Typing proficiency of at least 25 words per minute
  • Ability to remain composed during high-pressure situations
  • Ability to follow protocols and instructions precisely
  • English fluency required
  • Prior experience in at least two preferred areas: Call Taking, Fire/Rescue Dispatch, Law Enforcement Dispatch
  • Availability to work assigned shifts
  • Adherence to jurisdictional employment policies
