Position Overview

A large acute-care hospital in Las Vegas, NV is seeking an experienced Director of Surgical Services to provide strategic and operational leadership across surgical departments. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care through oversight of clinical operations, staffing, quality initiatives, financial performance, and service growth. The Director fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, and excellence while ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.


Key Responsibilities

Quality & Clinical Excellence

  • Lead the implementation of evidence-based practices to enhance patient safety, quality outcomes, and clinical effectiveness

  • Ensure adherence to standards of care, regulatory requirements, and accreditation guidelines

  • Monitor clinical practice variation to improve efficiency, outcomes, and cost control

  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures aligned with legal and regulatory standards

  • Ensure regular equipment maintenance and compliance with accreditation requirements

  • Optimize patient throughput through volume forecasting, patient flow coordination, and admission/discharge planning

  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration and ensure appropriate clinical competencies across teams

  • Direct nursing practice and surgical unit operations, ensuring patient and family needs are assessed, met, and evaluated


Service & Patient Experience

  • Provide leadership in delivering an exceptional and consistent patient experience

  • Utilize patient and customer feedback to identify opportunities for service improvement

  • Develop and execute strategies to enhance patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes

  • Collaborate with patient experience leaders and subject matter experts to implement best practices


People & Leadership

  • Foster a culture aligned with the organization’s mission, vision, and values

  • Drive employee engagement, recognition, and retention initiatives

  • Identify training and professional development needs; provide coaching and performance feedback

  • Build and sustain a high-performing, talent-driven surgical services team


Growth & Strategic Development

  • Partner with physicians and executive leadership to expand or enhance surgical service lines

  • Identify opportunities for program growth, innovation, and market differentiation

  • Support outreach initiatives and service expansion strategies to increase surgical volume


Financial & Operational Management

  • Participate in annual budgeting, including staffing, equipment, and supply planning

  • Monitor departmental financial performance; analyze trends and variances

  • Implement strategies to address budget gaps and improve financial outcomes

  • Ensure effective labor management, including staffing optimization, productivity, and premium pay control

  • Identify and implement cost-reduction opportunities without compromising quality of care


Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) – Required

  • Master’s Degree – Preferred

  • Minimum 1 year of recent experience as a Director of Surgical Services in an acute-care setting – Required

  • Minimum 3 years of progressive leadership experience in acute-care Surgical Services – Required


Operational Scope

  • Reports to senior executive leadership (VP-level)

  • Oversight of:

    • Operating Rooms (OR)

    • Cardiovascular OR (CVOR)

    • Anesthesia Technicians

    • Endoscopy

    • Sterile Processing Department (SPD)

    • Environmental Services (OR-specific)

  • Direct leadership of:

    • 3 Managers

    • Approximately 160+ FTEs


Program Overview

  • 20+ Operating Rooms

  • 18,000+ surgical cases annually (60–80 cases/day)

  • Comprehensive surgical services including:

    • Adult & Pediatric Surgery

    • Adult & Pediatric Cardiac Programs

    • Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Trauma, Burn, and Urology

  • High-volume emergency-driven surgical caseload

  • Robust regional outreach and transfer program
