Position Title: Special Education Long-Term Substitute (SPED – Long Term Sub)

Shift: Day (09:00 AM – 04:30 PM)
Assignment Length: 22 Weeks
Weekly Hours: 40 hours
Pay Rate: $34–$39 per hour
Position Overview:
The Special Education Long-Term Substitute provides temporary instructional and classroom support for students with disabilities during an extended teacher absence. This role ensures continuity of instruction, services, and compliance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) while maintaining a structured, supportive learning environment. The Long-Term Substitute works closely with special education staff, administrators, and related service providers to meet students’ academic, behavioral, and functional needs.
Responsibilities:
Deliver special education instruction aligned with existing IEP goals and lesson plans
Implement accommodations, modifications, and support strategies as outlined in student IEPs
Provide instruction in individual, small-group, and inclusive classroom settings as assigned
Maintain classroom routines, expectations, and behavior support systems
Collect and document data on student progress toward IEP goals
Collaborate with special education teachers, general education staff, and related service providers
Participate in IEP meetings, team meetings, and parent communication as needed
Ensure compliance with IDEA and school/district policies during the assignment
Maintain accurate documentation, progress notes, and student records
Create and maintain a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment
Follow lesson plans while adapting instruction to meet student needs
Required Qualifications:
Education & Licensure:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field
Active or eligible Virginia Special Education teaching license preferred
Long-term substitute eligibility per district and state requirements
Skills & Experience:
Experience working with students with disabilities in a school-based setting
Knowledge of special education laws, IEP implementation, and classroom practices
Ability to manage classrooms and support diverse learning needs
Strong organizational, time management, and documentation skills
Effective communication and collaboration skills
Flexibility, professionalism, and adaptability in a temporary role
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience as a long-term substitute in a special education setting
Experience supporting students with a range of disabilities
Familiarity with behavior support plans and inclusive practices
Ability to quickly adapt to established classroom routines and expectations
