Job Summary

The Director of Behavioral Health oversees the overall function, staffing, and operations of the behavioral health unit(s), ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care. This role fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement while supporting strategic initiatives, policies, and procedures.


Key Responsibilities

  • Promote evidence-based practices to advance patient safety and quality outcomes.

  • Ensure adherence to clinical standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Manage variation in clinical practice to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and cost.

  • Maintain compliance with legal, accreditation, and regulatory standards.

  • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment and resources.

  • Oversee patient throughput, admission, and discharge planning to optimize care delivery.

  • Develop care coordination policies to improve safety, efficiency, and quality.

  • Foster interdisciplinary communication and ensure staff competency aligns with patient care needs.

  • Direct nursing practice and unit operations, ensuring patient and family needs are met.

  • Provide leadership to achieve exceptional patient experience and satisfaction.

  • Use feedback mechanisms to benchmark performance and implement improvement strategies.

  • Foster a positive workplace culture, supporting employee engagement and development.

  • Provide coaching, feedback, and training to enhance staff performance.

  • Attract, develop, engage, and retain top talent within the department.

  • Collaborate with administrative teams and physicians to enhance or develop new services.

  • Identify opportunities for program expansion, growth, and innovation.

  • Participate in budget planning and monitoring for staffing, supplies, and operational needs.

  • Ensure effective labor management, productivity, and cost control.


Qualifications

  • 5+ years of recent acute care inpatient Behavioral Health management experience (Manager or Assistant Nurse Manager).

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license required.

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of employment start.

  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification within 90 days of employment start.

  • Fingerprint/background clearance required.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work under pressure and foster a compassionate care environment.

  • Unit size: 48 beds / 38 average daily census

  • FTEs overseen: Approximately 24

  • Departments managed: Behavioral Health Unit only

  • Trauma level: Level II
