Position Summary

The Nurse Manager of Critical Care (Medical ICU) is responsible for the overall leadership and operational management of the Medical Intensive Care Unit. This role oversees planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating nursing services in alignment with organizational mission, vision, and strategic goals. The Nurse Manager partners closely with interdisciplinary leaders to ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight for Medical ICU operations, ensuring delivery of evidence-based, patient-centered critical care.

  • Plan, organize, delegate, direct, and evaluate nursing services and personnel within the unit.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary leaders to coordinate care delivery and unit operations.

  • Maintain clear, effective communication across teams and departments.

  • Develop, implement, and recommend policies, procedures, and initiatives to improve quality, safety, efficiency, and patient outcomes.

  • Ensure compliance with professional nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.

  • Support a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Lead quality and regulatory readiness initiatives within the Medical ICU.

Reporting Structure & Unit Details

  • Reports to: Director of Critical Care

  • Unit Type: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)

  • Number of Beds: 16

  • FTEs Supervised: Approximately 45

  • Additional Departments Overseen: Medical ICU only

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of recent acute care leadership experience in Critical Care

    • ICU leadership experience strongly preferred

    • Charge Nurse–only experience will not be considered

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required

  • Advanced degree preferred

  • Active Texas RN license or compact state license

  • Current BLS and ACLS (AHA or equivalent)

  • Strong clinical expertise in adult critical care

Preferred Qualifications

  • CCRN and/or CNRN certification

  • Prior experience within large, complex healthcare systems

  • Strong focus on quality, regulatory compliance, and care delivery optimization

  • Collaborative leadership style with a team-focused mindset
