Labor and Delivery
Shift Type: Night Shift
Schedule: 3 × 12-hour shifts per week
Shift Hours: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
Assignment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
The Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive obstetric care to patients during labor, delivery, postpartum recovery, and newborn transition. This role requires flexibility to float between Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Nursery units and strong clinical expertise in obstetric nursing within an acute care hospital setting.
Provide direct nursing care to laboring and postpartum patients and newborns
Monitor maternal and fetal status, including fetal heart rate interpretation
Assist with and circulate during cesarean sections
Scrub for cesarean sections (preferred)
Support vaginal and operative deliveries in collaboration with physicians and midwives
Provide immediate postpartum and newborn care
Float between Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Nursery units as needed
Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and develop individualized care plans
Administer medications and IV therapies per provider orders
Educate patients and families on labor, delivery, postpartum, and newborn care
Accurately document all care in the electronic medical record
Respond effectively to obstetric emergencies and participate in rapid response situations
Maintain compliance with patient safety, infection control, and regulatory standards
Active New York State RN license
BLS certification (must be current or able to recertify)
Minimum of 1.5 years of recent Labor & Delivery experience (within the past 2 years) in an acute care hospital of similar size and acuity
Demonstrated experience circulating cesarean sections (required)
Ability to work independently with minimal orientation and supervision
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
Experience scrubbing cesarean sections
Experience floating between L&D, Postpartum, and Nursery units
EPIC Electronic Medical Records experience
Experience in large hospitals or trauma centers
Travelers must have prior experience in hospitals of equal or greater size and acuity
No history of professional license or certification suspension or investigation
No history of professional liability claims
Verification of legal right to work in the United States
Successful completion of pre-employment health clearance
Drug screening and criminal background check
Strong clinical judgment and assessment skills
Ability to manage acute obstetric situations
Effective communication with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams
