Job Overview

The Wound Care Registered Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive wound, ostomy, and continence care to patients. The RN will complete focused assessments, develop individualized care plans, implement specialized treatments, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct focused health assessment interviews related to wound, ostomy, and continence care.

  • Perform detailed physical assessments and develop individualized plans of care.

  • Recommend appropriate medications, treatments, and interventions.

  • Develop, revise, and evaluate standards of wound care; assist with selecting supplies, equipment, and technology.

  • Assess and document patient responses to wound, ostomy, and continence treatments.

  • Evaluate quality of care delivered on the unit and provide feedback to clinical staff.

  • Collaborate with healthcare providers and refer to other disciplines as needed.

  • Educate and counsel patients and families on wound/ostomy care and prevention of complications.

  • Provide and evaluate staff education programs including orientation and in-service training.

  • Perform routine assessments for patients at risk of pressure injuries and initiate prevention strategies.

  • Communicate challenges and escalate concerns including ethical or conflict resolution issues.

  • Collaborate routinely with Wound Care leadership to recommend best practices.

  • Participate in unit and hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives.

  • Deliver culturally competent care and education based on patient beliefs and needs.

  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with patient rights policies.

  • Maintain professional competency through continuous learning and clinical practice activities.

  • Identify available community resources and assist patients in accessing services.

  • Manage wound-care–related equipment including specialty beds and negative pressure devices
