Job Title: IT Infrastructure Manager/ Mainframe Z/OS

Location: New York, NY
Duration: Long-term Contract

Position Overview:

Seeking a highly experienced IT Infrastructure Engineer to lead and manage Mainframe Systems operations within a large-scale enterprise environment. The role involves overseeing system performance, capacity planning, project execution, vendor relations, and technical leadership for a team responsible for mainframe and related infrastructure.

This position requires a hands-on leader who can balance strategic planning with operational excellence, ensuring system stability, scalability, and compliance with service level agreements (SLAs).

Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Oversight:

  • Supervise the Mainframe Systems team, ensuring optimal performance and collaboration across departments.

  • Provide leadership in z/OS administration, performance tuning, hardware configuration, and mainframe technology implementation.

  • Ensure daily operations are effectively monitored and issues escalated appropriately.

  • Lead disaster recovery planning, testing, and documentation.

  • Develop, enforce, and maintain technical standards and operational policies.

Performance, Monitoring & Capacity Planning:

  • Analyze system performance metrics and capacity data.

  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and capacity forecasting to ensure system efficiency and scalability.

Project Management:

  • Lead hardware and software upgrade projects, ensuring timely completion and minimal downtime.

  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans.

  • Mentor technical staff to enhance skills and knowledge across infrastructure initiatives.

Software & Version Management:

  • Oversee maintenance and version control of mainframe software.

  • Track and evaluate new software releases to maintain compliance and stability.

Vendor & Technology Management:

  • Serve as primary liaison with software and hardware vendors.

  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement emerging technologies aligned with organizational needs.

Documentation & Compliance:

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for system configurations, policies, and procedures.

  • Collaborate with operations teams to ensure all documentation is accurate and up to date.

Budget & Fiscal Planning:

  • Develop infrastructure budget plans for hardware and software investments.

  • Forecast costs for upgrades, replacements, and capacity expansions based on lifecycle and organizational needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, and 4+ years of relevant experience in data center or infrastructure engineering; OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field with 8+ years of relevant experience in infrastructure management; OR

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 20+ years of experience in infrastructure management, preferably in large-scale enterprise environments.

  • Expertise in mainframe systems technologies and IBM z/OS administration; candidates with strong AIX/Linux/Unix infrastructure experience will also be considered.

  • Deep understanding of system control structures, logic, and security management.

  • Strong experience in performance analysis, capacity planning, and system architecture design.

  • Proven leadership in managing teams, setting performance goals, and mentoring technical staff.

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills; able to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.

  • Self-motivated, analytical, and capable of independent problem-solving.

  • Experience with enterprise storage systems and disaster recovery planning preferred.
