Location: New York, NY 10025
Schedule: Full-time | 37.5 hours per week | 7:00 AM – 3:15 PM | 5 days/week (some weekends required)

Pay Rate: Up to $24/hour

Job Summary

The Patient Care Associate (PCA) is a vital member of a multidisciplinary psychiatric care team, responsible for providing compassionate, hands-on support to patients admitted to inpatient behavioral health units. This role involves assisting with admissions, orientation, therapeutic activities, and daily living needs while ensuring patient safety, confidentiality, and adherence to clinical and organizational standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in patient admissions and orientations, including verifying belongings, reviewing unit guidelines, and introducing patients to their rooms and routines.

  • Collaborate with nurses and interdisciplinary teams to prepare and update individualized care plans.

  • Assist in implementing therapeutic activities that promote recovery and patient engagement.

  • Perform direct care duties such as obtaining vital signs, recording health metrics, assisting with hygiene, feeding, and dressing, and conducting EKGs or venipuncture as needed.

  • Collect and process laboratory specimens (sputum, blood, urine) and perform urine testing.

  • Facilitate and co-lead patient group activities, including recreational and therapeutic sessions.

  • Support discharge processes, including coordinating patient transportation and family communication.

  • Escort patients to diagnostic appointments, court appearances, or approved external activities.

  • Intervene in crisis situations, including applying physical restraints in accordance with safety protocols.

  • Provide support in seclusion/restraint scenarios following department guidelines.

  • Respond to emergencies, initiate CPR, and assist during Code 77 situations.

  • Maintain strict infection control and ensure a safe, clean environment for patients and staff.

  • Manage an assigned caseload, offering ongoing supportive counseling to patients and families.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in law enforcement, nursing, psychiatric/behavioral health, or related mental health settings.

  • Proficiency in venipuncture and EKG procedures.

  • Strong interpersonal, de-escalation, and crisis management abilities.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.

Education

  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of full-time experience in a related field (law enforcement, nursing, or behavioral health)
    OR

  • Preferred: Associate’s degree in mental health or a related discipline

Certifications & Licensure

  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – American Heart Association

  • Medical Assistant Training Certificate

  • CPI or PMCS Certification (Crisis Prevention/Management)

  • SEL and SCR Background Checks
