Assist surgeons during operative procedures, ensuring a clear view of the surgical site by retracting tissues, suctioning, irrigating, sponging, and manipulating sutures.
Support patient positioning as instructed by the surgeon for optimal exposure.
Control bleeding using appropriate techniques including suturing, clamping, and applying dressings.
Close wounds using subcutaneous, subcuticular, or skin closure methods as per surgeon’s directive.
Harvest veins, radial arteries, tendons, or skin grafts independently when required.
Apply postoperative dressings and assist in securing drainage systems.
Remain up-to-date with surgical technologies and best practices relevant to specialty areas.
Provide technical expertise in major surgical cases and maintain competence through ongoing training.
Required Skills & Experience:
Strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
Proficiency in surgical assisting tasks and sterile techniques.
Excellent eye-hand coordination; ability to stand for extended periods.
Sound clinical judgment and ability to adapt in high-pressure environments.
Preferred Experience:
Minimum of 4 years of general surgical experience; 2 years in a surgical specialty preferred.
Education Requirements:
Completion of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program OR
Foreign Medical Graduate with at least 3 years of surgical assistance experience in the U.S. (case-by-case review)
Certifications & Licensure:
Required: BLS (American Heart Association)
Preferred: NSAA, CFA (AST), or RNFA certification from the National Assistant at Surgery Certification (NASC)
