Job Title: Senior Protein Purification Scientist

Location: Elkton, VA
Duration: 1-year contract
Compensation: $45/hour

Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Protein Purification Scientist to join a Protein Science or Bioprocess Development team. This role focuses on recombinant protein purification using AKTA chromatography systems across bacterial, yeast, and mammalian expression platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute protein purification using AKTA purification systems at various production scales
  • Support protein production efforts from laboratory to commercial scale
  • Utilize biochemical and analytical techniques to assess protein quality, concentration, purity, and activity
  • Maintain accurate lab documentation and contribute to data system management
  • Interpret analytical results and collaborate within a cross-functional scientific team
  • Adhere to SOPs, safety protocols, and regulatory guidelines

Required Experience & Skills:

  • Expertise in protein purification from bacterial, yeast, or mammalian systems
  • Hands-on proficiency with AKTA Start, Pure, or Avant purification systems
  • Strong foundation in protein biochemistry and laboratory techniques (buffer preparation, filtration, pipetting)
  • Familiarity with analytical methods (SDS-PAGE, UV spectrometry, BCA, Bradford assays)
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a GMP or regulated environment
  • Proficiency with AKTA Unicorn software
  • Expertise in column chromatography (ion exchange, SEC, affinity)
  • Prior exposure to protein formulation and stability studies
  • Education:
  • B.S. in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or Molecular Biology (3–5 years of experience)
  • M.S. (1–3 years)
  • Ph.D. (entry-level with strong hands-on skills may be considered)

Additional Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication
  • Team-oriented mindset to thrive in fast-paced R&D or process development settings
  • Familiarity with data analysis, scientific reporting, and troubleshooting purification runs
