Job Title: Medical Assistant - Contract
Location: New York, NY

Duties:

  1. Fulfill patient care responsibilities, including venipuncture, EKGs, organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam rooms, assisting with walking, transferring, and dressing, collecting specimens, and performing point-of-care testing. Assist physicians with procedures, take vital signs, relay instructions, and provide information to patients and families.
    • Physical Activity Level: Heavy (frequent lifting, carrying, etc.)
    • Work Environment: General office environment; heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity may be required.
  2. Perform clerical tasks, such as managing patient medical records, obtaining lab and referral information, completing forms, and managing charts using an electronic medical record (EMR) system or manually.
  3. Enter orders into the EMR system or prepare prescription refill requests for physician review and approval.
  4. Inventory, order, or re-stock medical supplies as needed.
  5. Prepare examination rooms and instruments following sterilization techniques in compliance with infection control policies.
  6. Maintain a logging system for refrigeration of medications, point-of-care testing, sterilization processes, crash carts, etc.
  7. Check expiration dates on medications and medical supplies, disposing of items per institutional policy.
  8. Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by adhering to standards and legal regulations.
  9. Comply with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for exposure to blood, chemicals, radiation, and other hazardous materials.
  10. Assist in maintaining medical charts, including filing reports, test results, and home care forms.
  11. Schedule surgeries and procedures, verify times with patients, and prepare charts, pre-admission, and consent forms.
  12. Perform proficient phlebotomy duties if required.
  13. Schedule appointments, register patients, and update demographic and insurance information.
  14. Adjust and confirm patient office schedules.
  15. Verify and update insurance information using internal or web-based systems.
  16. Perform and verify pre-certification for procedures as necessary.
  17. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills:

  • Computer Skills: Basic proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • General Competencies:
    1. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse patient populations.
    2. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    3. Excellent telephone etiquette.
    4. Knowledge of medical terminology and HIPAA guidelines.
    5. Familiarity with electronic medical records or billing systems is preferred but not required.
    6. Adaptability in a changing work environment.

Education:

  • High School Diploma/GED required, with completion of an approved Medical Assistant certificate course.

Licensing and Certification Requirements:

  • Medical Assistant certificate from an approved school.
  • BCLS certification (AHA) – Required.
  • Certified Medical Assistant preferred.

Certifications & Licenses:

  • BLS certification.

Language:

  • English (Speak, Read, Write).
