Overview:

As an Interventional Radiology Registered Nurse, you will provide specialized nursing care to patients undergoing interventional radiology procedures. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective patient care throughout the interventional radiology process. Your expertise in nursing and knowledge of radiology procedures will play a crucial role in achieving positive patient outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Pre-Procedure Assessment: Conduct thorough assessments of patients scheduled for interventional radiology procedures, including reviewing medical histories, performing physical examinations, and assessing vital signs. Identify any potential risks or contraindications and communicate findings to the healthcare team.
  • Patient Education and Preparation: Educate patients and their families about the interventional radiology procedure, including risks, benefits, and post-procedure care. Ensure patients understand the procedure and provide emotional support to alleviate anxiety.
  • Procedure Assistance: Assist the interventional radiologist and other team members during procedures, providing patient monitoring, medication administration, and support. Monitor vital signs, assess patient response, and anticipate and address any complications or emergencies that may arise.
  • Medication Management: Administer medications, including conscious sedation and analgesia, as ordered by the interventional radiologist. Monitor patients closely during sedation and manage any adverse reactions.
  • Post-Procedure Care: Monitor patients closely post-procedure, assessing vital signs, managing pain, and ensuring patient comfort. Provide post-procedure instructions and education to patients and their families.
  • Documentation and Record-Keeping: Accurately document all aspects of patient care, including assessments, interventions, medications administered, and patient responses. Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date medical records.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with the interventional radiology team, including radiologists, technologists, and other healthcare professionals, to ensure seamless and coordinated care. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Equipment and Resource Management: Ensure the availability, proper functioning, and cleanliness of interventional radiology equipment and supplies. Assist with inventory management and ordering of necessary materials.
  • Quality Assurance: Adhere to quality assurance and infection control protocols, including maintaining a sterile environment, proper handling of equipment, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Professional Development: Stay updated with advancements in interventional radiology nursing, including new procedures, techniques, and equipment. Engage in ongoing education and professional development activities.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in an acute care setting, preferably in interventional radiology or a related field.
  • Knowledge of interventional radiology procedures, including angiography, biopsies, catheter placements, and other minimally invasive techniques.
  • Familiarity with radiology imaging and equipment used in interventional radiology procedures.
  • Excellent assessment skills and the ability to recognize and respond to changes in patient conditions.
  • Strong medication management skills, including the administration of conscious sedation and monitoring of patient responses.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with the healthcare team and provide patient education and support.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities in high-stress situations and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient safety and providing quality care in accordance with best practices and regulatory standards.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Interventional Radiology Registered Nurses work in interventional radiology departments or specialized radiology units within hospitals or medical facilities.
  • The role may require standing for extended periods during procedures and patient care activities.
  • The work environment may involve exposure to radiation, requiring adherence to safety protocols and the use of appropriate protective measures.
  • Shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required to provide 24/7 patient care coverage.
