Title: Post Partum Registered Nurse

Overview:

As a Postpartum Registered Nurse, you will provide specialized nursing care to women and newborns during the postpartum period. Your role will involve assessing the physical and emotional well-being of mothers, monitoring newborns' health, providing education and support to new parents, and ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for recovery. You will work closely with the healthcare team to promote the health and bonding of the mother-baby dyad.

Responsibilities:

  • Patient Assessment: Conduct comprehensive assessments of postpartum mothers, including monitoring vital signs, assessing incisions, evaluating pain levels, and assessing emotional well-being. Assess newborns for normal growth and development.
  • Postpartum Care: Provide postpartum care and support to mothers, including assisting with breastfeeding, providing pain management, promoting maternal-infant bonding, and monitoring for any postpartum complications.
  • Education and Support: Educate mothers and families on newborn care, breastfeeding techniques, postpartum recovery, and self-care. Provide emotional support and address any concerns or questions.
  • Medication and Treatment Administration: Administer medications and treatments as ordered by physicians, following established protocols and guidelines. Monitor and document patient responses to medications and treatments.
  • Patient Safety: Ensure a safe and clean environment for mothers and newborns. Implement infection control protocols and safety measures to prevent hospital-acquired infections and other potential risks.
  • Collaborative Care: Collaborate with the healthcare team, including physicians, lactation consultants, and social workers, to provide comprehensive care to mothers and newborns. Communicate effectively to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, including assessments, interventions, and outcomes. Document any changes in patient condition and report to the appropriate healthcare professionals.
  • Discharge Planning: Assist in developing discharge plans for mothers and newborns, including providing instructions for at-home care, scheduling follow-up appointments, and arranging for additional support services, if necessary.
  • Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives and adhere to evidence-based practices to enhance patient outcomes and the overall postpartum care experience.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay updated with the latest advancements in postpartum care and evidence-based practices. Participate in educational opportunities, training programs, and professional development activities to enhance knowledge and skills.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Valid nursing license and registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is preferred, but an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) may be accepted.
  • Previous experience in postpartum care or obstetrics is highly desired.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification may be required for some positions.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills to provide comprehensive postpartum care to mothers and newborns.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with the healthcare team and provide education and support to patients and families.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, managing multiple responsibilities and prioritizing patient care needs.
  • Compassion, empathy, and a strong focus on patient-centered care.
  • Knowledge of postpartum complications, breastfeeding techniques, and newborn care practices.
  • Ability to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as postpartum units operate around the clock.
