Position Summary

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Registered Nurse (RN) to join a Long Term Care team in Wrangell, Alaska. The RN will coordinate and deliver professional nursing care for residents in a long-term care setting while ensuring high standards of patient safety, clinical excellence, and compassionate care.

This role includes patient assessment, medication administration, care planning, staff supervision, patient and family education, emergency response, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The RN practices independently during assigned shifts and maintains accountability for clinical decision-making, delegation, and supervision of support staff.

Key Responsibilities

Resident Care & Clinical Duties

• Deliver safe, therapeutic, and efficient nursing care
• Prioritize resident care based on acuity and clinical needs
• Administer medications and treatments accurately
• Implement and document nursing interventions and procedures
• Monitor resident responses and update care plans as appropriate
• Maintain infection prevention and safety standards
• Coordinate care with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare teams
• Respond effectively during emergency situations
• Ensure confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA standards

Assessment & Care Planning

• Complete nursing admission assessments
• Identify nursing diagnoses and resident care needs
• Interpret laboratory and diagnostic findings
• Develop and revise individualized care plans
• Document reassessments, resident progress, and clinical updates in the EHR
• Provide accurate and detailed shift reports

Education & Communication

• Educate residents and families regarding treatment plans and disease processes
• Participate in care conferences and discharge planning
• Provide aftercare and discharge education
• Mentor and orient new staff, travelers, and students
• Participate in departmental training and in-service education

Leadership & Team Support

• Supervise CNAs, LPNs, Techs, and support staff during shifts
• Serve as Contact RN when assigned
• Assist with staffing coordination and floating needs
• Support departmental quality goals and nursing standards
• Participate in staff meetings and annual competencies
• Assume Charge Nurse responsibilities when needed

Compliance & Reporting

• Follow mandatory state and organizational reporting requirements
• Maintain all required certifications and licensure
• Adhere to hospital and departmental policies and procedures

Qualifications

Education

Graduate of an accredited nursing program:

• ADN
• BSN
• Nursing Diploma

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Licensure & Certifications

Required

• Current unrestricted RN license in Alaska or another U.S. state
• Direct hires must apply for Alaska licensure prior to start date
• Current BLS certification

Additional Competencies Required

• Clinical Competency within 3 months of hire and every 3 years thereafter
• High Risk Competency within 3 months of hire and annually thereafter

Required Certifications

• BLS – American Heart Association
• Registered Nurse License – Alaska State Board of Nursing
• Clinical Competency Assessment
• High Risk Competency Validation

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 1–2 years of nursing experience preferred
• Candidates with less than 1 year may be considered based on overall qualifications

Required Knowledge

• Nursing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
• Medication administration and pharmacology
• Emergency response and symptom recognition
• Long-term care nursing standards and best practices

Required Skills

• Strong clinical nursing and patient care skills
• Ability to operate medical equipment including AEDs
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Accurate electronic health record documentation

Required Abilities

• Ability to lead and collaborate effectively with healthcare teams
• Build positive relationships with residents, families, and staff
• Manage complex medical and psychosocial resident needs
• Utilize de-escalation and resident management techniques appropriately

Physical Requirements

• Frequent standing, walking, sitting, reaching, and hand usage
• Occasional climbing, kneeling, crouching, and crawling
• Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs
