Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented GIS Specialist to support the maintenance and accuracy of geographic data. This role involves working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to review, update, and validate spatial data, ensuring alignment with real-world conditions.

This is an entry-level opportunity ideal for recent graduates or students with a foundational understanding of GIS concepts and mapping tools.


Key Responsibilities

  • Review and update GIS layers to ensure data accuracy and completeness
  • Compare GIS features (e.g., street curb lines) with aerial imagery to identify discrepancies
  • Edit and maintain attribute data, including naming and classification
  • Perform data entry, validation, and data cleanup activities
  • Verify spatial data against source records and imagery
  • Maintain proper documentation and adhere to data standards
  • Support data quality improvement initiatives across GIS datasets
  • Work independently after initial training while maintaining high accuracy

Required Education

  • Currently pursuing or completed coursework in one of the following fields:
    • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
    • Geography
    • Environmental Science
    • Earth Science
    • Urban Planning
    • Civil Engineering Technology
    • Geomatics or Surveying Technology

Preferred Education

  • Completion of at least one introductory GIS course
  • Enrollment in a GIS certificate or associate degree program

Required Skills

  • Basic knowledge of GIS concepts and tools
  • Familiarity with GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel or similar tools
  • Strong data entry and validation skills
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to organize and manage data effectively

Preferred Skills

  • Exposure to GPS data collection
  • Experience editing GIS features (points, lines, polygons)
  • Understanding of data quality control processes
  • Familiarity with metadata documentation
  • Knowledge of file organization and naming conventions
