Position: Inpatient Coding Specialist III

Location: Remote (Work from Home – Based in Richmond, VA)
Job Type: Full-Time (Permanent)

Compensation:

  • Pay Rate: $24.61 – $34.00/hour (based on experience)

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Inpatient Coding Specialist III to review inpatient medical records and assign accurate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes. This role involves DRG validation, ensuring compliance with coding guidelines, and maintaining high standards of accuracy and productivity in a remote work environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Review and evaluate inpatient medical record documentation.
  • Assign, sequence, validate, and/or edit ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes.
  • Perform DRG assignment and validation across multiple facilities.
  • Ensure accurate abstraction of clinical and demographic data.
  • Maintain coding accuracy and meet productivity benchmarks.
  • Utilize complete medical records for accurate code assignment.
  • Participate in coding audits as required.
  • Identify and resolve coding discrepancies and quality issues.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management (HIM) or Health Information Technology (HIT) preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of inpatient coding experience in an acute care hospital setting
  • Strong experience with DRG coding required
  • Experience in LTAC, physician billing, or insurance coding will not be considered

Certifications:

  • RHIT, RHIA, or CCS certification required

Skills & Competencies:

  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding
  • Strong knowledge of DRG assignment and validation
  • Understanding of POA (Present on Admission) indicators
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to meet productivity standards (~1.8 charts/hour)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Fully remote/work-from-home position
  • Must be able to work independently and meet productivity and quality benchmarks
