Job Description

Purpose of Position

The Pharmacy Technician assists the Pharmacist by performing technical and supportive pharmacy functions in an inpatient setting.


Preferred Skills

  • IV room experience strongly preferred

  • Experience with medication dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis) for refilling and replenishment

  • Medication reconciliation experience preferred but not required


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review and process departmental medication order requests

  • Prepare medications for distribution to patient care units

  • Distribute medications to patient care areas

  • Order medications from approved suppliers

  • Prepare parenteral medications

  • Maintain medication inventory, including stocking, checking expiration dates, and processing returns

  • Train and orient new pharmacy support personnel as needed

  • Perform billing and other pharmacy duties that do not require a pharmacist

  • Maintain appropriate records and regulatory documentation

  • Pre-package and label bulk medications into unit-dose containers

  • Answer incoming phone calls and direct medication or clinical inquiries to the pharmacist

  • Provide excellent customer service to patients, families, visitors, and staff

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the pharmacy department

  • Perform other related duties as assigned


Additional Duties for Nationally Certified Inpatient Pharmacy Technicians

  • Obtain patient medication histories for medication reconciliation and input into the Medication Administration Record (MAR)

  • Assist with chemotherapy preparation and dosage calculation checks


Education / Experience / Training

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English

  • High School Diploma or GED required

  • Massachusetts State Registration as a Pharmacy Technician required

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification required

  • Minimum 1 year of recent Pharmacy Technician experience (within the past 3 years) required

  • 3 years of experience preferred

  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills required
