Pathologists’ Assistant (Contract)

Location: Carbondale, IL
Duration: 13 Weeks
Schedule: Day Shift | Monday – Friday | 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Weekly Gross Pay: $2,000 – $2,400 (Based on experience)


Position Overview

A hospital-based pathology laboratory is seeking a Pathologists’ Assistant for a 13-week contract assignment.

This role is responsible for assisting pathologists with the gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens, preparing samples for laboratory testing, and supporting pathology operations through accurate documentation and patient case review.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with laboratory staff and medical professionals.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with gross description and dissection of surgical tissue specimens.

  • Prepare and submit specimens for histological and laboratory testing.

  • Review and summarize patient medical histories relevant to pathology cases.

  • Perform procedures within the scope of practice under the supervision of a pathologist.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and laboratory records.

  • Collaborate effectively with pathologists, laboratory staff, and hospital personnel.

  • Adhere to established quality standards and laboratory protocols.


Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Health Science, Pathology, or a related field.

  • ASCP Certification – Required.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a healthcare or laboratory setting.


Skills & Competencies

  • Strong technical knowledge of surgical specimen handling and pathology procedures.

  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Effective communication and collaboration with medical and laboratory teams.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment.


Physical Requirements

  • Intermittent manual hand manipulation for specimen preparation.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs as required.
