Position Overview

A leading acute care hospital in Nashville, TN is seeking an experienced Hospital Laboratory Director to oversee clinical laboratory operations.

This leadership role is responsible for directing laboratory programs, ensuring regulatory compliance, driving innovation, and maintaining operational excellence in a complex hospital laboratory environment. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership experience, progressive lab management expertise, and a solid background in hospital-based clinical laboratory services.


Key Responsibilities

Operational & Strategic Leadership

  • Direct laboratory operations, programs, and activities to meet organizational and regulatory standards

  • Develop and execute departmental strategies to achieve goals related to service, quality, compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, and personnel management

  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement

Staffing & Team Development

  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and qualified personnel

  • Oversee hiring, onboarding, competency validation, and performance management

  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and leadership development

  • Promote open communication and employee engagement

 Financial Oversight

  • Monitor laboratory resource utilization and financial performance

  • Identify variances and implement corrective strategies

  • Prepare and present Monthly Operating Review reports

  • Manage vendor relationships and supply contracts in collaboration with Supply Chain

 Regulatory & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies including:

    • CAP

    • JCAHO

    • CLIA

    • FDA

    • CMS

  • Develop, implement, and annually review policies and procedures

  • Maintain readiness for inspections and audits

Quality & Process Improvement

  • Proactively seek feedback from internal and external stakeholders

  • Incorporate feedback into operational and quality improvement initiatives

  • Ensure high standards of patient care delivery


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Biomedical Science, Biology, or Chemistry (required)

  • Master’s Degree (preferred)

  • National Certification as a Medical Technologist (required)

  • State laboratory license where applicable (required for submission in applicable states)

  • Minimum 3+ years of progressive laboratory management experience in complex laboratory operations

  • Leadership experience required

  • Hospital clinical laboratory experience preferred

  • COVID-19 vaccination compliance (per local/state/federal regulations unless exempt)
