A respected hospital in Northeast San Antonio is seeking an experienced Director of Emergency Services to lead a high-volume, Level III Trauma Emergency Department.

The hospital is recognized for advanced specialty programs including comprehensive stroke care, accredited chest pain services with Primary PCI, advanced neurosurgical services, and joint replacement excellence. The organization maintains national safety recognitions and fosters a collaborative, patient-centered culture focused on quality and accountability.

An additional 78-bed expansion is planned for Q1 2027, creating strong growth and leadership opportunities.

Department Overview

  • Emergency Department Beds: 50

  • Trauma Level: III

  • Annual Volume: ~65,000+ visits (190–200 patients/day; avg. 180–185)

  • Acuity: High EMS and critical patient volume

  • EMR: Meditech

  • Leadership Structure:

    • 2 Emergency Department Managers

    • Nursing Operations Director (overseeing CDU and inpatient holds)

    • Reports to the Chief Nursing Officer

  • Employee Engagement Scores: 70s

Position Summary

The Director of Emergency Services is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic direction, operational management, and clinical performance of the Emergency Department.

This role ensures delivery of high-quality, patient-centered emergency care through strong operational oversight, fiscal accountability, regulatory compliance, and leadership development. The Director fosters a culture of collaboration, accountability, safety, and performance excellence.

This position requires a visible, strong leader who can continue to advance department performance, improve accountability, and support growth initiatives.

Responsibilities

Quality & Clinical Excellence

  • Advance patient safety and quality outcomes through evidence-based practice.

  • Ensure adherence to regulatory, accreditation, and trauma standards.

  • Monitor and improve clinical performance metrics and patient throughput.

  • Standardize practice to reduce variation and improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

  • Maintain readiness for surveys, accreditations, and designations.

  • Ensure equipment maintenance and compliance standards are met.

Operational Leadership

  • Oversee staffing, scheduling, productivity, and position control.

  • Lead volume forecasting, surge planning, and patient flow initiatives.

  • Direct nursing practice standards and emergency operations.

  • Strengthen care coordination processes to improve throughput and outcomes.

  • Support hospital-wide surge tactics and ED boarding solutions.

Service & Patient Experience

  • Lead initiatives to enhance patient satisfaction and service excellence.

  • Leverage feedback data to identify improvement opportunities.

  • Partner with physician and patient experience teams to elevate care delivery.

People & Culture

  • Promote a culture aligned with organizational mission and values.

  • Develop leadership capability within managers and frontline staff.

  • Provide coaching, performance management, and engagement strategies.

  • Recruit, retain, and develop high-performing emergency services teams.

Financial Stewardship

  • Participate in annual budget planning (revenue, labor, supplies, equipment).

  • Monitor departmental financial performance and address variances.

  • Ensure effective labor management and productivity oversight.

  • Identify cost-reduction opportunities while maintaining quality standards.

Strategic Growth

  • Collaborate with executive leadership and physicians on service expansion.

  • Support department growth aligned with hospital expansion plans.

  • Identify innovation opportunities, stakeholder engagement strategies, and technology enhancements.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required

  • Master’s Degree preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 1+ year of recent Director-level Emergency Department experience required
    (Facility may consider a very strong Emergency Department Manager with demonstrated metrics and accomplishments.)

  • Charge Nurse or Supervisor experience alone will not be considered.

  • Minimum 3+ years of recent Emergency Department experience required.

Compensation & Benefits

Base Salary Range: $130,000 – $150,000 (based on years and depth of experience)
Incentive Bonus: 17.5% – 26.25%
Sign-On Bonus: $20,000
Relocation Assistance: Case-by-case basis
