A leading acute care hospital in Anchorage, Alaska is seeking an experienced Director of Surgical Services to lead its perioperative departments. This 250+ bed facility is recognized for excellence in cardiac care, colorectal surgery, and treatment of complex gastrointestinal conditions.

Position Summary

The Director of Surgical Services provides strategic and operational leadership for all surgical services departments. This role ensures high-quality, patient-centered care while overseeing staffing, budgets, compliance, and performance improvement initiatives. The Director fosters collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement aligned with organizational goals.


Key Responsibilities

Quality & Patient Care

  • Implement evidence-based practices to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes

  • Reduce variation in clinical practice to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, legal, and accreditation standards

  • Maintain equipment readiness and operational efficiency

  • Oversee patient throughput, care coordination, admissions, and discharges

  • Direct nursing practice and daily unit operations

Service & Patient Experience

  • Lead initiatives to enhance patient satisfaction and service quality

  • Benchmark performance and implement improvement strategies

  • Collaborate with patient experience and quality leaders

People & Leadership

  • Promote a culture aligned with organizational mission, vision, and values

  • Develop, mentor, and retain high-performing leaders and staff

  • Provide coaching, feedback, and recognition

Growth & Strategy

  • Partner with administrative and medical leadership to expand surgical services

  • Identify opportunities for new service lines and technological advancements

Finance & Budgeting

  • Participate in annual budget development (staffing, supplies, capital, and revenue)

  • Monitor financial performance and implement corrective actions

  • Optimize labor utilization and operational efficiency

Additional Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Adhere to organizational code of conduct and ethical standards


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required (Master’s degree preferred)

  • 1+ year of recent acute care Director of Surgical Services experience

  • 3+ years of acute care Surgical Services experience

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and strategic planning skills

  • Reports To: Vice President of Operations

  • Direct Reports: 4 Managers

  • Staff Oversight: Approximately 125–150 FTEs

  • Facilities:

    • 11 Operating Rooms

    • 2 Endoscopy Suites

  • Surgical Volume: ~400 cases per month

  • Specialty Areas:
