A hospital in Western North Carolina is seeking an experienced Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Director to lead its cardiovascular surgical services.

Position Summary

The CVOR Director provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for the Cardiovascular Operating Room. This role is responsible for ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care through oversight of department operations, staffing, financial management, regulatory compliance, and service line growth.

The Director fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, and excellence while aligning departmental performance with organizational goals.

Responsibilities

Clinical & Quality Leadership

  • Promote evidence-based practice to improve patient safety and surgical outcomes.

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and infection prevention standards.

  • Oversee quality improvement initiatives and monitor key performance indicators.

  • Standardize clinical workflows to enhance efficiency and reduce variation.

Operational Oversight

  • Direct daily CVOR operations including scheduling, case flow, and resource allocation.

  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels based on volume and acuity.

  • Optimize surgical throughput and on-time case starts.

  • Oversee equipment readiness, maintenance, and capital planning.

Financial Management

  • Develop and manage departmental budgets (labor, supplies, capital).

  • Monitor productivity, premium pay, and resource utilization.

  • Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining quality standards.

People Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop managers and clinical staff.

  • Drive recruitment, retention, and succession planning strategies.

  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching to enhance team performance.

  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration between surgeons, anesthesia, perfusion, and nursing teams.

Strategic Growth

  • Partner with executive leadership and cardiovascular physicians to expand CVOR services.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and procedural advancements.

  • Support service line growth initiatives to increase surgical volume and market presence.

Department Scope (Typical CVOR Environment)

  • Dedicated Cardiovascular OR suites

  • Open-heart and structural heart procedures

  • Vascular and thoracic surgical services

  • High-acuity, fast-paced surgical environment

  • Collaboration with perfusion, anesthesia, and cardiac surgery teams

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (Required)

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or related field (Preferred)

Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years of progressive leadership experience in acute care surgical services

  • Prior CVOR leadership experience required

  • Experience managing high-acuity cardiovascular surgical programs preferred

Licensure & Certifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license (North Carolina or compact state)

  • BLS required

  • ACLS preferred
