Position Overview

The Registered Nurse – Labor & Delivery provides comprehensive nursing care to obstetric patients across the antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and neonatal phases. This role requires independent clinical judgment, strong emergency response skills, and the ability to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in a dynamic acute care environment.

The RN supports laboring patients, newborns, post-cesarean patients, and families while collaborating closely with physicians and the interdisciplinary care team. The position includes on-call responsibilities, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency response coverage.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Safety

  • Deliver safe, therapeutic, and efficient nursing care based on physician orders, standards of care, and nursing policies

  • Provide care to antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, neonatal, and post-surgical C-section patients

  • Independently assess patient conditions, prioritize care based on acuity, and respond effectively to emergencies

  • Monitor, interpret, and document electronic fetal monitoring using current NICHD terminology

  • Perform scheduled non-stress tests (NSTs) and well-baby assessments

  • Stabilize high-risk maternal and neonatal patients and prepare for transfer to tertiary care facilities

  • Administer age-appropriate medications and therapies safely and accurately

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information

Labor, Delivery & Postpartum Care

  • Provide focused 1:1 nursing care during labor including assessments, comfort measures, pain management, and labor coaching

  • Assist physicians with vaginal deliveries, C-sections, pelvic exams, and bedside obstetric procedures

  • Provide total peri-operative nursing care for emergency C-sections, including trauma and fetal distress cases

  • Deliver post-surgical recovery care and discharge education for C-section patients

  • Offer breastfeeding education, support, and consultation

Care Coordination & Documentation

  • Coordinate patient care activities with physicians and interdisciplinary team members

  • Develop, implement, and revise individualized nursing care plans

  • Document assessments, interventions, reassessments, and patient responses accurately and timely

  • Transcribe and verify physician orders

  • Provide clear shift reports in accordance with unit guidelines

Education & Patient Support

  • Educate patients and families on procedures, disease processes, postpartum care, newborn care, and discharge planning

  • Provide emotional and psychosocial support to patients and families

  • Evaluate effectiveness of patient education and modify teaching as needed

  • Participate in patient care conferences and interdisciplinary discussions

Leadership & Team Collaboration

  • Delegate and supervise CNA, LPN, PCT, and support staff during assigned shifts

  • Serve as a resource and mentor to new staff, travelers, and students

  • Assist with staff orientation and training

  • Function as Charge/Contact RN when assigned

  • Promote teamwork, professionalism, and adherence to policies and standards

Professional Practice & Compliance

  • Maintain required certifications, competencies, and licensure

  • Participate in unit meetings, education, and quality improvement initiatives

  • Comply with departmental scheduling, on-call assignments, and dress code

  • Complete mandatory education and annual competencies

  • Address concerns through appropriate leadership channels

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • May provide functional supervision and direction to nursing assistants and support staff

Education, Certifications & Licensure

  • Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license (Alaska or other U.S. state)

    • Direct hires must apply for Alaska licensure prior to start date

    • Agency staff must hold an active Alaska RN license

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Required Certifications:

    • Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association

    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

    • Certifications must be obtained within 6 months of hire if not held at start
