Position Summary

The Echocardiographer performs direct patient cardiac diagnostic testing procedures with a high level of technical skill, accuracy, and professionalism. This role ensures timely, dependable diagnostic services consistent with current standards of care, departmental guidelines, and hospital policies. The Echocardiographer provides age-specific care across the lifespan and serves as a clinical resource to physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.


Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive echocardiographic studies as ordered by physicians, including but not limited to:

    • Transthoracic Echocardiography (2-D, M-Mode, Color Flow Doppler)

    • Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE)

    • Exercise Stress Echocardiography

    • Pharmacological Stress Echocardiography

  • Perform additional cardiac diagnostic procedures as assigned, including:

    • Electrocardiograms (EKG)

    • Holter monitor preparation, monitoring, and analysis

    • Cardiac stress testing

  • Operate and maintain cardiac diagnostic equipment, including echocardiography systems, stress testing systems, electrocardiographs, Holter monitors, and computerized analysis tools

  • Utilize hospital information systems accurately for scheduling, documentation, and charging of diagnostic studies

  • Follow infection control policies and demonstrate appropriate aseptic techniques and equipment disinfection

  • Provide clinical guidance and preceptorship to students from affiliated educational institutions when applicable

  • Demonstrate competency in performing cardiac diagnostic procedures for all age groups, including neonatal and pediatric patients

  • Perform all other duties as assigned within the scope of practice


Required Education & Credentials

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Licensure / Certification:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) or equivalent certification


Experience Requirements

Required:

  • Successful completion of an accredited echocardiography certification program
    OR

  • Minimum of two (2) years of hands-on echocardiography experience

Preferred:

  • Extensive echocardiography experience in an acute-care hospital setting

  • Experience performing pediatric and neonatal echocardiography studies


Preferred Education

  • Certificate Program in Cardiovascular Sonography
