Location: New York, NY / Hybrid
Duration: 12 Months (Contract)
We are seeking a senior, hands-on Project Manager to lead a multi-phase Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) implementation and related downstream data extraction and archiving initiatives within a large healthcare system.
This role bridges Epic, EMPI, system interfaces, and legacy data archiving. The PM will act as the primary liaison between product, engineering, vendors, and stakeholders, ensuring clear scope, strong execution, and delivery across parallel workstreams. This is a technical PM role, not administrative.
EMPI implementation and interface coordination
Epic data feeds and Epic-integrated workflows
Legacy EMR / source system data extraction and archiving
Cross-team coordination across product, engineering, and IT stakeholders
Driving execution in a discovery-heavy, evolving environment
Lead day-to-day execution for EMPI implementation and Epic interface workstreams
Manage parallel Phase 1 (EMPI + Epic feeds) and Phase 2 (data usage, outbound interfaces, archive planning)
Maintain detailed project plans, timelines, milestones, and dependency tracking
Drive discovery, decision-making, and delivery in ambiguous environments
Coordinate EMPI setup activities, including inbound and outbound data feeds
Manage Epic interface discussions, dependencies, and sequencing
Partner with engineering teams responsible for EMPI configuration and integrations
Translate technical discussions into actionable plans for business and clinical stakeholders
Support archive planning for multiple legacy EMR and source systems (up to 12 anticipated)
Coordinate data extraction activities tied to decommissioning and archival workflows
Ensure EMPI alignment to downstream archive usage (patient identity resolution across systems)
Track risks, dependencies, and sequencing related to extraction, validation, and decommissioning
Serve as central communication bridge between product management, engineering, client IT/clinical stakeholders, and external vendors
Facilitate working sessions, status meetings, and executive updates
Deliver concise written and verbal communications to technical and non-technical audiences
Establish lightweight governance and reporting structures
Provide weekly status updates, risk logs, and issue tracking
Identify long poles, blockers, and risks early and drive mitigation plans
Support onboarding and ramp-up of resources to avoid delivery delays
7+ years of Project Management experience in healthcare IT environments
Direct EMPI implementation experience
Epic certification required
Proven experience managing system interfaces (Epic to downstream platforms)
Strong understanding of healthcare data flows, patient identity, and interoperability
Experience supporting data extraction, migration, or archiving initiatives
Demonstrated ability to operate as a technical PM in engineering-focused discussions
Excellent communication skills, able to translate technical concepts into plain language
Experience with legacy EMR systems and healthcare archives (e.g., Meditech, OnBase, or similar)
Prior work in large public-sector or hospital network environments
Experience managing projects with evolving requirements and incomplete scope
Familiarity with EMPI usage for downstream analytics, reporting, or archive retrieval
Background in system decommissioning initiatives
PMP or equivalent certification (preferred, not required)
Proactive and comfortable driving conversations forward
Highly organized with strong follow-through
Able to operate effectively in ambiguous, discovery-focused environments
Trusted communicator across technical and non-technical teams
Capable of “bulldogging” complex initiatives while respecting governance structures
