Job Summary:

  • The Sterile Processing Technician (Central Supply Technician) is responsible for cleaning, processing, and sterilizing surgical instruments, patient care equipment, and re-useable medical/surgical items. The technician will also serve as a Case Cart Attendant for the Operating Room, ensuring that required instruments and supplies are properly assembled and delivered for surgical procedures. This position requires adherence to established departmental policies and procedures, as well as maintaining high standards of safety and cleanliness.

Responsibilities:

  • Receive, sort, process, assemble, and sterilize patient care equipment and surgical instruments following established departmental protocols.
  • Operate and load sterilizers (Steam, ETO, Sterrad, Steris) and ensure that biological tests and Bowie Dick tests are performed, incubated, read, and documented correctly.
  • Accurately complete sterilization records, ensuring all items processed are properly labeled and logged, including chemical integrators and computerized printouts.
  • Assemble and prepare case carts for delivery to operating rooms, using the doctor's preference information to ensure all required instruments, drugs, and special equipment are included.
  • Notify the nursing team in the operating room of missing items and work with the coordinator to resolve shortages of supplies or equipment. Complete daily checklists.
  • Lift a minimum of 50 lbs, push and pull a minimum of 60 lbs, and stand for the duration of the shift.
  • Follow universal precautions and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) while processing and handling instruments and supplies.
  • Work every other weekend and three out of six holidays as scheduled.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of prior experience as a Certified Sterile Processing Technician (CST) or Central Supply Technician (SPT).
  • Proficient in decontaminating, cleaning, and sterilizing surgical instruments, supplies, medical devices, and equipment.
  • Experience with processing, assembling, packaging, and storing medical devices and surgical supplies.
  • Competent in maintaining inventory and distributing supplies and equipment to various departments.
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with an average of 20-25 procedures per day.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts based on department needs.

Required Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Certifications & Licensure:

National Certification:

CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) or CBSPDT (Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) required.
