Job Title: Registered Nurse - School Health Services
Location: Elizabeth, NJ

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in this role will manage and maintain a functional health services office and ensure the health and wellness of students within the school. Responsibilities include conducting medical exams, assisting with health screenings, and coordinating with health services and parents to address any medical needs or concerns. This role supports the school environment by promoting student health, performing routine and required screenings, and responding to medical emergencies within the assigned building.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Health Office Management: Maintain an organized, efficient, and functional health services office.
  • Medical Examinations: Conduct student health exams as required by law or school policy, referring cases of suspected disease or injury to the medical inspector for further evaluation.
  • Health Screenings:
    • Schedule and assist medical inspectors in special student examinations.
    • Conduct annual visual acuity and audiometric exams, recording results in student health records.
    • Perform biennial scoliosis screenings and maintain detailed health records.
    • Administer tuberculosis screenings as mandated by state law.
  • Student Health Monitoring:
    • Examine returning students after illness or injury, advising on school re-entry or exclusion for communicable disease.
    • Monitor and report any high incidents of respiratory or other illnesses in the assigned building.
  • Emergency and Routine Medical Care:
    • Respond to medical emergencies within the building and assist in reporting accidents on school premises.
    • Provide appropriate responses to DNR orders and manage student health needs during school hours.
  • Health Education:
    • Conduct health classes and develop health education materials to assist teachers with health instruction.
  • Liaison with Health Services:
    • Consult with parents or guardians on student health issues, providing necessary follow-ups.
    • Maintain communication with community health agencies serving district students and staff.
    • Serve on the child study team and participate in building inspections in conjunction with the medical inspector.
  • Reporting:
    • Prepare detailed monthly reports on student health services activities for the Supervisor of Nursing Services.
    • Document and update student health records as required by law and school policy.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Experience: Previous nursing experience in a school or pediatric setting preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
    • Effective communication skills for coordinating with parents, students, and medical staff.
    • Ability to respond to medical emergencies and manage student health needs promptly and professionally.
    • Knowledge of health education and ability to develop and deliver health-related information.

Education and Certification:

  • Education: Graduate from an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred.
  • Licensure: Active NJ Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Certifications: BLS certification required.
