Shift: Monday-Friday 4pm-12am 

Job Summary:

The Pathologist Assistant plays a key role in assisting the pathologist with the receipt, preparation, and examination of surgical tissue specimens and autopsies. This position ensures that all specimens are properly logged, processed, and disposed of in a timely and safe manner.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissection and gross description, ensuring proper specimen accessioning. Obtain clinical history, lab data, x-rays, and scans as needed.
  2. Coordinate and/or perform small and large gross descriptions, as well as dissections of surgical and autopsy specimens. Instruct and monitor clinical staff involved in gross descriptions and dissection of biopsies and small specimens.
  3. Coordinate frozen section activities with late dissections; assist in the Frozen Section Laboratory by freezing, cutting, staining, and preparing slides. Prepare tissues for microscopic examination.
  4. Assist in the preparation and performance of human postmortem examinations, including dissection, submission of samples, and dictation of gross findings.
  5. Ensure all specimens are appropriately logged, processed, and disposed of safely and in a timely manner.
  6. Gather data and prepare statistical reports, such as turnaround time and data analysis.
  7. Provide instruction to residents and surgical fellows on the appropriate processing of large specimen dissections.
  8. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree and completion of an accredited Master’s Program in Pathology Assistant or equivalent.
  • New York State Pathology Assistant License required.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience in surgical grossing and autopsy.
  • Certification as a Pathologist’s Assistant (ASCP) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology is required.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of surgical specimen dissection and gross description techniques.
  • Experience coordinating frozen section activities and preparing tissues for microscopic examination.
  • Ability to instruct and supervise clinical staff.
  • Proficient in preparing statistical reports.
  • Fluent in English (spoken, written, and reading).

Certifications & Licenses:

  • ASCP Certification (American Society for Clinical Pathology)
