2025 Licensed School Nurse

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Provide training on the background and the importance of accessing and including these in their tracking process.
  • Provide information to and collaborate with Human Resources staff and the Administrative Assistant on the requirements for PCA certification and the Excluded Provider List requirements.
  • Work closely and develop cooperative relationships with Case Managers and Paraprofessionals to advocate for compliance to School requirements and early identification of new students who may qualify based on changes in their needs or family situations or new to the district.
  • Maintain and promote strict confidentiality as described in HIPPA and FERPA for students who are identified as qualifying for School.
  • Respond with care and concern to any parent questions regarding the process Schools uses for all aspects of the School process. Refer Parent to Administrative Staff if needed.
  • Explore and research expanded opportunities for Third Party funding through Mental Health dollars and other private insurance possibilities.
  • Provide direct professional nursing services such as first aid, illness and emergency care, medication administration, g-tube feedings, catheterizations etc., and health teaching.
  • Provide mental health support including intervention and/or referral to appropriate school staff or community agencies.
  • Enhance the educational process through modification or removal of health-related barriers to learning and by promoting student wellness.
  • Perform screening procedures for hearing and vision.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

Extra Responsibilities:

  • LSN’s participate in growth and evaluation requirements: student engagement plan and principal observations.
  • Participate in community organizations and professional associations that relate to fostering student and families learning, health and development.
  • Attend and participate in local, regional, and state professional organizations and conferences related to student support services and school health programs in order to keep current relative to the field of school health, the district community, and the broader regional and state community.
  • Organize and maintain the emergency response team.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Evidence of experience as PHN or LSN at elementary and/or secondary level with strong nursing skills preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Evidence of skills and experience in working with medically dependent, medically fragile and medically complex students and their families.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in special education process and practice preferred.
