Job Summary:

The Laboratory Clerk performs clerical duties, supporting the laboratory by processing information, routing calls, and managing records. The role involves minimal independent judgment but requires familiarity with departmental functions, policies, and practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform clerical tasks such as making simple postings to departmental records using the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Courteously route calls to various departments within the laboratory.
  • Conduct limited research of records to verify or locate information.
  • Provide laboratory results to authorized personnel such as physicians, nursing staff, or departments upon request.
  • Fax laboratory results to physicians or other departments, with appropriate consent.
  • Access the Laboratory Computer System to accession specimens and retrieve results efficiently.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities within the department.
  • Maintain patient and employee confidentiality when managing information.
  • Observe compliance policies, safety procedures, and precautions, including HIPAA and Infection Control regulations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the location of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in the laboratory.
  • Display a professional and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families, and other staff members.
  • Maintain a courteous and patient demeanor during interactions with hospital staff and the extended community.
  • Ensure efficient workflow through clear communication and teamwork with co-workers.
  • Handle biohazardous specimens according to laboratory standards and transport them to the appropriate working areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned when necessary.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Excellent command of the English language.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Ability to handle biohazardous specimens following laboratory standards.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Education:

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Minimum of six months of clerical work experience.

Certifications & Licenses:

  • HIPAA compliance certification.
  • Infection Control certification.

Languages:

  • English (speak, read, write).

Schedule:

  • Hours per week: 37.5 (7.5 hours per day, 5 days per week)
