Job Title: Medical Assistant - Contract
Location: Long Island City, NY

Duties:

  1. Fulfill patient care responsibilities, such as performing venipuncture and EKGs, organizing patient flow, assisting patients with walking, transferring, and dressing, collecting specimens, conducting point-of-care testing, and preparing for exams. Assist physicians with various procedures, take vital signs, relay instructions, and provide information to patients and families.
    • Physical Activity Level: Heavy (frequent and sustained lifting, carrying, etc.)
    • Work Environment: General office environment; heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity may be required.
  2. Perform clerical tasks, including managing patient medical records, obtaining lab reports, completing forms, and managing charts using electronic medical records (EMR) or manually.
  3. Enter orders into the EMR system or prepare prescription refill requests for physician review and approval.
  4. Inventory, order, or re-stock medical supplies as necessary.
  5. Set up examination rooms and instruments following sterilization techniques and infection control policies.
  6. Maintain a logging system for refrigeration of medications, point-of-care testing, sterilization processes, and crash carts.
  7. Check expiration dates on medications and supplies, disposing of them appropriately according to policy.
  8. Ensure a safe and healthy work environment by following standards and legal regulations.
  9. Comply with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements for exposure to hazardous materials.
  10. Assist in maintaining medical charts, including filing reports, test results, and home care forms.
  11. Schedule surgeries and procedures or work with the Surgical Coordinator to verify patient times and prepare pre-admission and consent forms.
  12. Perform proficient phlebotomy duties as required.
  13. Schedule appointments, register patients, and update demographic and insurance information.
  14. Adjust and confirm patient office schedules.
  15. Verify and update insurance information using internal or web-based systems.
  16. Perform and verify pre-certifications for procedures as necessary.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills:

  • Computer Skills: Basic proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • General Competencies:
    1. Ability to communicate effectively with multicultural and language-diverse patients.
    2. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    3. Excellent telephone etiquette.
    4. Proficient in medical terminology and HIPAA guidelines.
    5. Knowledge of electronic medical records or billing systems is preferred but not required.
    6. Ability to adapt to a growing and changing environment.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED, with completion of an approved Medical Assistant certificate course.

Licensing and Certification Requirements:

  • Medical Assistant certificate from an approved school.
  • BCLS certification (AHA) – Required.
  • Certified Medical Assistant is preferred.

Certifications & Licenses:

  • BLS certification.
  • Medical Assistant certificate.

Languages:

  • English (Speak, Read, Write).

Minimum Degree Required:

  • Completed High School (Diploma or GED).
